Revealed: 10 Ways Lawyers Rip-Off Clients
By Stephen Bloom | November 17, 2009
The Business Insider Law Review has a revealing new article on 10 Ways Lawyers Rip-Off Clients. While these aren’t the only ways some lawyers take advantage of clients, the list is a good starting point for scrutinizing your own lawyer’s billing practices. Here’s what to watch out for:
10. Double Billing
9. Padding Hours
8. Overhead
7. Trivial Tasks
6. Expense Accounts
5. Exorbitant rates
4. Inefficiency
3. Negligence
2. Training
1. Working While Sleeping
While these are bad enough, in my experience, an even bigger way many lawyers rip-off clients is by “pouring gasoline” on smoldering conflicts. Lawyers too often fuel their clients’ frustration and resentment by playing to their egos and encouraging them to seek retribution through the legal system. In many cases, clients could save themselves even more unnecessary legal fees by prayerfully seeking reconciliation instead of revenge.
