Action Update on “Christian Lawyers of America, Inc.” Consumer Warning

    By Stephen Bloom | March 23, 2010

Earlier this month, I alerted our readers to consumer warnings about Christian Lawyers of America, Inc.

Today, a lawyer on staff at the State Bar of California (the state where Christian Lawyers of America is based) contacted me with the following important action update for anyone potentially scammed by the organization in question or other similar loan modification rip-offs:

The State Bar of California (the agency responsible regulating and disciplining attorneys admitted to the practice of law in California) has formed a Loan Modification Taskforce in order to deal specifically with attorney misconduct in loan modification cases.  If you believe you have been the victim of illegal or unethical behavior by an attorney in a loan modification matter, you have the right to file a complaint with the State Bar against that attorney.  If you choose to file a complaint, please do so as soon as possible because if you wait too long the State Bar may be barred from taking action against the attorney.

The California State Bar’s website is www.calbar.ca.gov

You can get further information on how to file a complaint and download a complaint form here.

We do have a small claims lawsuit date of 5-10-10 and his agent for service has been served. I am not that familiar with the court process but I am doing my best to prevent this from happening to others. This is pure abuse of everything attorney’s fear. He will face his master when the time comes.. My hope for small was to not for the money but for the thought that he could just do this and get away with it. I did find out that his office in La Mesa closed shop a couple of days ago. Please contact me I would love to expose this type of behavior and disrespect for God, Christian Community and innocent people. Respesctfully, Susanne Harris

I am filing a complaint against Matthew M. MCormick himself as well as Christian Lawyers of America. All complaints should address attention to Matthew M. McCormick and his deceitful practices as an attorney.

I am a former employee of Christian Liars of America and was contacted today by the California Bar Association. If you have any information you would like to divulge to the CA Bar Association, please contact Christine at 213-765-1162. They have FINALLY received enough complaints that they are now going after him. Please call her right away.

I regret the day I referred CLA to my family for our loan modification process. This was recommended by Frank Pastore on his radio talk show at KKLA. Although they used the name “Christian”, they were mostly unethical and non-professional with their dealings with us. We should have known better when we were passed around from one rep to another due to frequent resigning of employees.

We are not yet done with our modification process with them and now that I need to contact them , all their phone lines are not working numbers anymore and my emails for my contact:Deborah -operations manager have all been failed to deliver lately….have they closed shop totally? What can I do now? I paid 4k for a service undone…Our contract says, if I am not satisfied, there is a 70% money backa guarantee …that would not help if i lose my home now?!

Finally (though too late?) someone is trying to come to our rescue! Ditto to all of the above in trying to get any communication from CLOA. They said to put their fees on our Visa and they would reduce them in half or more. We paid out $12,000+ in fees for modification and debt reduction, and so far have paid out more then $3,000 in interest alone on that Visa account. No one has ever communicated about those debts since we signed, except to mail our phone logs. We DID get the harassing phone calls stopped from HSBC on our main complaint last August, but they have since attached our checking account for withdrawals which have been already paid many times over. This company is HSBC bank and should be sent to jail. So should CLOA for not grabbing them and sending them to jail. We are so frustrated. We still think we will never see our only savings again and are facing retirement soon!!!

Okay, I got the info packet from Christine (Deputy Trial Counsel with State Bar of California, 213-765-1162). She was very helpful. I am in the process of gathering all the information needed to file a complaint and request reimbursement from the State Bar’s Client Security Fund.

If anyone has a REPUTABLE ATTORNEY (I know, contradiction in terms) who would be interested in filing a class action lawsuit, Christine said that one could be fairly easily filed and probably successful. Hopefully, we could all see some punitive damages out of this sheister.

After months and months of no communication from Matthew Mccormick we finally started receiving calls from him (about 3 weeks ago). However, the calls turned into texts, and then nothing again. He said he was overwhelmed with his case load, etc. Any excuse he could use to string us along. We have filed a dispute with our credit card companies that we paid him with and things look hopeful. To everyone who has been screwed by the “christian” Matthew Mccormick don’t just roll over, FIGHT IT.

I would like to know who you used David Sterling. I have not been able to contact anyone in that office through phone, e-mail or website. I paid 6300 to Residential Law Center. One of my credit cards said they were notified by Avenger Law. I have been in contact by Donald Green but he has not been paid and now is asking me to pay. It has been 10 months and if I do not pay all Mr. Green’s work will go away. Not only that he will be sending my file back to McCormick. Thank you for all the posts.
My brother contacted them and I sure wish I would have found this website sooner or did my homework. I referred my brother and McCormick contacted him personally. McCormick even wanted to meet with my brother to show how legitimate he was. He called my brother up to 3times a week before he got the check. Now he has not even bothered to e-mail or call.
Thank you all for the info and we do need to stop this guy. I will be filing my complaint with the Bar this week. Call Christine.

We have experienced the worst kind of frustration, disappointment, loss of sleep, loss of money, stress, and righteous anger as a result of doing business with this law firm. I am about to mail our complaint form and application for reimbursemet. May God bring us justice.

I want to complain also. But I am wondering what to do about the home loan modification. I sent in the required documents about a year ago. I have not defaulted yet on my home loans (thank God) but did default on credit card debt. CLA started to call me about the home loan modificaiton about a couple of months ago. I have not yet sent in the additional documents since I thought they wouldn’t do anything for me and also wondered if I should even deal with them because of how bad the debt settlement went. I spent $6000 on the debt settlement and $3000 on the home loan modification for a total of $9000 paid via two credit cards to CLA (they encouraged you to put their bill on credit cards). Now yesterday June 15th, they sent me an email saying that unless I send in the documents they will be forced to drop my case and I won’t get the $3,000.00 back. I tried to call the phone number listed - 818-456-1250 and it has been disconnected. I sent an email to the email listed: tgates@christianlawyersofamerica.com and haven’t yet heard back, but that was a few minutes ago. I also sent one to John Smith of CLA at a different email address. John Smith called me on June 5, 2010 with an urgent message and asked me to call back, but the message cannot be heard clearly and and can’t make out the phone number I’m suppossed to call back.

      Any suggestions, anyone?

Also, I am now working with Donald Green on the Debt Settlement, but like others have had to pay extra to get the debt settled. Also, because the debt settlement was mishandled by CLA, I got sued by one of the credit card companies. It has been a real nightmare! I had extreme difficulty trying to talk to CLA employees about the debt settlement and the home loan modification.

To Everyone, I received a case petition file from the California State Bar that outlines some serious allegations, some of them criminal such as fraud. The case number used by the state bar is 10-TE-06302. I would urge everyone to call the Major Fraud Division
Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office
      201 N. Figueroa St., Suite 1600
      Los Angeles, CA. 90012
      Phone: (213) 580-3200

If you get the receptionist, ask to be transferred to an investigator, leave a message if they don’t answer and they WILL return your phone call. When you call or leave a message, tell them that you were a victim of a scam or ponzi scheme or fraud by Christian Lawyers of America and Matthew M. McCormick. Tell them that you have complained to the California State Bar and that the State Bar has alleged criminal behavior in their petition; state that you are wondering if there are any actions you can take to help prosecute Matthew M. McCormick. May the Lord bless you all.

The District Attorney needs to see the massive scheme Matthew McCormick has done and they need to know your story. CALL CALL CALL, DO NOT GIVE UP!! The walls of Jericho fell due to persistence and diligence of God’s people. The DA’s office needs to be overwhelmed with all of our complaints and stories. CALL CALL CALL! Most of all keep praying!!

I would not believe anything Matthew McCormick says. McCormick offered to meet personally with my brother to take the cash and run. He did not even have my brother sign a retainer or contract or anything. He called my brother before he got the money, once he got the money he ran. He has not called my brother at all since then.

I just spoke to Christine from the Cal State Bar, Matthew McCormick has agreed to settle out of court. The condition of the settlement is disbarment. Also, he has agreed to repay a multitude of people back the money he stole from them. The hearing tomorrow in LA will not likely take place. People will not likely be able to collect from Matthew McCormick; however, everyone needs to file claims with the Client Security Fund. Also, everyone needs to contact the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and alert them of your situation. Disbarment is the furthest that the Cal State Bar can go as far as punishment. Matthew McCormick is accused of, what I call, a ponzi scheme (Bernie Madoff sound familiar?) and has stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from many people. He has used this money to build his home, make lavish purchases, and has done nothing in return for that money. He needs to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The case number used by the state bar is 10-TE-06302. I would urge everyone to call the Major Fraud Division
Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office
      201 N. Figueroa St., Suite 1600

      Good News, Yet Still Unconfirmed!

I was informed by someone close to the situation that Matt McCormick was disbarred from the CA Bar Association today. I cannot confirm this, I just checked the CA Bar website and they still show active, but it could take a while to update.

If anyone has any information, please post. Thanks to all who took action and called the CA Bar Association.

This disbarrment should be quite helpful for any of you who are in the middle of suing the crap out of this man.

Good luck to you all. God always comes through; not always with the timing we’d like, but He does.

    26. FormerEmployeeWithheld Says:

I would highly suggest everyone follow Hamilton’s advice in Post #21. The DA needs to prosecute him. You all have a chance of getting some money back. McCormick has all of his assets (and he’s got a lot) tied up in trusts in his kids and wife’s name. That doesn’t mean it can’t be liquidated with the right amount of fire power.

The IRS can take anything from anyone anytime, regardless of if it even belongs to them or not. They are the only agency I’m afraid of. If the IRS gets wind of his shenanigans, he’s toast.

I tried calling Christine and was told to contact a Lisa Foster. I spoke with her this morning and was told that I couldn’t file a complaint since Mr. McCormick already disbarred himself. I was told to fill out the reimbursement form…can anyone tell me what address and phone number I should use on the form for Mr. McCormick…I have different ones…I’m not sure what is valid as of right now. Also, how does this reimbursement work? It’s not guaranteed that we will get our money back right?

    28. Scammed by McCormick Says:
      August 27th, 2010 at 2:29 pm

Has anyone had any luck with getting assistance from the LA District Attorney’s office? My husband phoned them earlier today as we have been advised by postings on this site. He was told there wasn’t anything that they could do because the amount that we were scammed was only $4500 rather than several hundred thousand! He as advised to speak to the local police in the area where Christian Lawyers had their office.

There has to be a way to hold him accountable for his actions!
